About this Serie : BALANCE IN LIFE by Grace Ashruf

Throughout this collection, a reoccurring thematic circle exists. On the surface, this circle is symbolic of the sun & moon— together they are ever-present in our world. Deeper, the circle represents another endless spirit within each of us. We all have an inner strength we muster
to take steps toward expressing our goals and the roads we take to reach them. This is a powerful and universal force, which like the sun & moon requires balance to attain success.

Crossroads in our Life

In attached painting, titled ‘Crossroad’ , I push the concept of landscape even further towards abstraction. Viewed one way, the painting is a graphic, geometric abstraction of crossing lines and rich color. Through another view, hints of a city skyline at the top create a flattened landscape perspective; the lines become roads, a map seen from above. Use of text and letters reference many of the ‘crossroads’ that one encounters throughout life, both the physical crossroads of the land and the emotional crossroads in our minds. My textural painting techniques often evoke a feeling of ‘land,’ the surfaces and layers of the earth. The moody color palette puts the viewer in a thoughtful, introspective mood that allows them to contemplate their own ‘crossroads’. The painting evokes complex feelings, exploring the moment when we don’t yet know which way to choose or which direction to go, a time that is filled with both anxiety and excitement for the future.

STOLEN

STOLEN PAINTING

I have received a sad email from a UK collector that one of my paintings, was stolen from him. This painting ‘Passage’ (2004) was stolen out of his house in Aruba (Area Noord). Please contact me and/or the police if you have seen this painting somewhere in Aruba.

About this painting ‘Passage’
We are always on a path, no matter where we are in life. Moving along these passageways, we come to crossroads and moments of decision. In this highly textured painting, I was depicting the feeling of these passages through life, on the land and in our psyche. Thick red and yellow tones evoke similar feelings in the viewer of the emotional aspects of these life experiences. Strong brushstrokes, layers, and depth create the image of passageways on the earth, the geography could be natural or manmade. The strong textural elements create light and shadow on the surface of the painting. As in many of my paintings, markings upon the earth are explored as visual metaphors of human emotion and rites of passage.
